WANT TO SAVE THIS FOR LATER?
What I love about this recipe is that it uses simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen—ground beef, onions, garlic, and pantry staples like Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard.
I like to serve them with Smashed Potato Salad or Grilled Vegetables with Balsamic Vinegar & Herbs for a full, balanced dinner.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix gently to avoid tough patties.

2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.

3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
4. In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook until soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.

5. Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for 1-2 minutes.

6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, then add Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Simmer until thickened.

7. Return patties to the gravy. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes until cooked through.
8. Taste the gravy and adjust with salt and pepper.

Important Recipe Notes
- When combining the ground beef, egg, milk, bread crumbs, and seasonings, mix gently. Overmixing can make the patties tough.
- Make sure the patties are roughly the same size and thickness so they cook evenly.
- Browning the patties in the skillet first adds flavor and helps seal in juices. Don’t skip this step.
- Cook the onions slowly until soft and slightly caramelized for the best flavor in the gravy.
- Let the flour cook 1–2 minutes before adding broth to remove any raw flour taste. Whisk gradually to avoid lumps.
- You can prepare the patties ahead of time and store them in the fridge for up to a day. Cook them just before serving and finish in the gravy.
- Optional Add-Ins: Mushrooms or a mix of ground meats (beef and pork or turkey) can add extra flavor and richness.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a classic comfort meal.
