WANT TO SAVE THIS FOR LATER?
I love serving this with crunchy crackers, veggie sticks, or even just plain tortilla chips. It’s great for playdates, family movie nights, or holiday get-togethers. Also, you can make it ahead and let it sit in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
How to Make French Onion Dip
Ingredients you’ll need for this recipe
Step by Step Guide
1. Start by heating up a skillet on medium-low. Add the butter and olive oil, and once that butter is melting, toss in the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Let these onions cook slowly, stirring occasionally. The goal is golden, caramelized perfection, which will take about 20 to 30 minutes.

2. About 5 minutes before the onions are done, turn off the heat and drizzle in that sweet honey. Stir it in well and let the natural sugars from the onions and honey mingle.

3. Once the onions have cooled slightly, grab a big bowl and combine the sour cream, cream cheese, and those caramelized onions. Toss in a tablespoon of chopped chives for a fresh pop of flavor and color. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and mix everything together.

Serve and Enjoy!
Scoop the dip into a bowl, sprinkle a little extra chopped chives on top for garnish, and serve it alongside with chips, crackers, or even fresh veggies like carrots and cucumbers.

Important Recipe Notes
- Make sure to cook the onions over medium heat. This step is key to developing that rich, sweet flavor.
- Adjust honey to taste: Start with about a tablespoon of honey, but feel free to add more or less depending on how sweet you like your dip.
- Use fresh ingredients: Fresh onions, sour cream, and cream cheese make a big difference in flavor and texture.
- Make ahead: The dip tastes even better if you make it a few hours ahead and let it chill in the fridge so the flavors can meld together.
- Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and consume within 3-4 days. Stir before serving to refresh the texture.
- This dip pairs well with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies like carrots and celery sticks.
