Important Recipe Notes

  • Use bread like sourdough, rye, or even whole wheat work great. Just make sure it’s sturdy enough to hold the filling and cheese.
  • For cheese, cheddar is classic, but you can use Swiss, provolone, or even mozzarella for a different flavor.
  • Don’t over-broil – keep an eye on the oven since the cheese melts quickly and can burn fast.
  • You can skip the onions and pickles for the kids’ meal if they prefer simpler.
  • You can make the tuna filling ahead of time (up to 2 days), then just assemble and melt when you’re ready to eat.
